Our history and ethos
Hitchin Language Centre was established in 1993 as a response to the diminishing provision of foreign language classes for adults offered by the local authority. We became a co-operative in 1996. The direction of the Centre has been led by tutors since its inception and the aim is not principally commercial but to make language learning available to all in a practical and informal way.
Our company ethos is one of providing small group tuition in a friendly atmosphere. We pride ourselves on the very wide range of languages on offer and our flexibility in meeting our students' needs. We firmly believe that language learning is more effective in small informal groups where gaining a practical grasp of the language is all important. Being independent, we are refreshingly free of any syllabus or curriculum requirements and can tailor classes to the individual.
We are a Language Centre, not just a course provider and therefore have a wide range of knowledge and expertise which can be applied across many sectors. No matter what your request, contact us to see how we can help.
Until September 2022 Hitchin Language Centre was based in premises in Paynes Park House in the centre of Hitchin, where many of our classes used to be held. Before Covid, classes had always been conducted in person but lockdown led to us exploring online forums such as Zoom to enable classes to continue and this created an unexpected opportunity to extend our range.
With the return to classes in person we decided that the Paynes Park premises were no longer fit for purpose and instead to increase our use of venues which we had already been using when extra rooms were needed. We are very happy that we have been able to stay in the centre of Hitchin and be part of the local community by hiring facilities in: Hitchin Boys’ School, Friends’ Meeting House, Christchurch and Tilehouse Baptist Church.
Our administration base is a serviced office in Eastway Enterprise Centre, situated in Paynes Park, just opposite our previous premises.
Hitchin Language Centre is independent and therefore is free to decide on its own course content. Classes are organised in levels but the material covered is not prescribed, which allows tutors to respond more directly to the needs of each group. In this way we feel that we can really help students consolidate their learning and make firm progress.
The focus of our teaching is on practical application, so whatever your reason for learning; holidays, moving abroad, work, family or just simply a desire to do something mentally stimulating, we feel confident you will find our courses constructive.
